Regularly featured on the top 10 drives in the world, and rightly so, the Pacific Highway being one of the highlights of my holiday. Here is how to roll along the best part of the Pacific Highway in style – follow the tips below and click on the link provided for a detailed itinerary:
Tips: Drive north to south if you’re able to choose. That way you’re on the coast side of the highway, which means better panoramas, and it’s much easier to pull off into the best viewpoints.
The Drive form Carmel by the Sea to Morro Bay is 120 miles long and can be completed in 3 hours of non-stop driving, BUT where’s the fun in that? We recommend 5 hours of leisurely on and off driving, drawing up on from time to time on gravelly banks where your car can be parked.
The route starts in historic Monterey, visits the art colony of Carmel, and threads through Big Sur, where mountains plunge into the Pacific. Farther south, the landscape mellows to oak-studded hills as the road passes Hearst Castle on its way to Morro Bay. In places, the road has narrow shoulders and sharp drop-offs, so stay alert. This route can be tricky for RVs or other oversize vehicles.
In fact a pacific coast Highway should be seriously considered as a whole holiday, starting in the state of Washington and ending in San Diego. You must undertake your own research on the brilliance and accessibility of this amazing road.
